The approach to news values posited by Galtung & Ruge is firmly centred on how events become news. Quite simply, an event ‘either possesses them [factors of newsworthiness or ‘news factors’] or does not possess them’ (Galtung & Ruge 1965: 71). Thus it appears that the events themselves are somehow invested or infused with newsworthiness.
