What is Social Anthropology? Social Anthropology is the comparative study of human conduct and thought in their social context. Societies around the world vary enormously in their social, cultural and political forms, and their individual members display an initially overwhelming diversity of ideas and behaviour.
‘State’ shows how anthropology has used the concept to convey and prescribe stabilised order and classificatory identities within bounded social units, the message being that state and nation-state are ideological constructs that, when applied to social life, lead to skewed expectations.
Culture is understood here in its wide anthropological and sociological sense; by the subjects of culture, the author means individual producers, informal groups and social movements, NGOs, subjects of social economics, etc.
The goals of this class are fourfold: 1) de-exoticize and familiarize the “other” across space and time, 2) to assess how different, yet equally appropriate, lifestyles and worldviews arise, 3) to critically understand something about your own culture in reflection with others, and 4) to strive towards a holistic understanding of being human.
