Overall, we identified 65 unique studies that addressed Key Question 1, which focuses on (1) the combination of risk indicators that predict poor postpartum health outcomes for pregnant people upon their potential entry into prenatal care, and (2) the extent to which the combination of predictors vary by race/ethnicity.
Significant negative effects of social adversity on the developing fetus were found. Notably, these effects emerged despite good prenatal care and after accounting for maternal age and medical reproductive risk factors.
