The Smith River is the only major river system in California that flows freely and naturally for its entire length. It is also one of the largest, single, undammed Wild and Scenic River Systems in the United States. The Smith River National Recreation Area makes up most of the Gasquet Ranger District and is part of the Six Rivers National Forest.
The Smith River system is home to some of California’s strongest salmon and trout runs. The estuary remains open year-round, allowing fish passage in all seasons. Ancient redwoods groves, and other old growth forests in Redwood National and State Parks and the Smith River National Recreation Area (NRA).
The Smith River (Tolowa: xaa-wvn’-taa-ghii~-li~’, nii~-li~’ [5]) flows from the Klamath Mountains to the Pacific Ocean in Del Norte County in extreme northwestern California, on the West Coast of the United States. [2]
The only undammed river in California, it flows 25 miles from the Klamath Mountain range to the Pacific and is recognized as a Wild and Scenic River. Find the river’s finish line at Smith River County Park where the righteous fresh waters dump into the ocean.
The Smith River has been described as the “crown jewel of the Wild and Scenic River system” because its turquoise waterways flow freely from the Klamath Mountain range to the Pacific without a single dam. The Smith is California’s only undammed river system.
