This paper discusses five of the most important of these. A large part of it is about the third view: ideas recently put forward on the topic by David Bakhurst.
The philosophy of education can be defined as the study of the purposes, processes, nature and ideals of education. The word ‘education’ derives from one or both of the following concepts: ‘Educare’ – to draw out and realize potential; ‘Educere’ – to bring up and nurture.
