This is a narrative review of literature on therapeutic interventions with child and adolescent. survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The key aim was to examine treatment outcomes, established evidence-base and gaps in extant.
Three types of child sexual abuse are often distinguished: (i) non-contact sexual abuse (e.g. threats of sexual abuse, verbal sexual harassment, sexual solicitation, indecent exposure, exposing the child to pornography); (ii) contact sexual abuse involving sexual intercourse (i.e. sexual assault or rape – see below);
show that sexual abuse in childhood and adoles-cence has lifelong psychological, physical, sexual and social impacts. The findings of this study can help alert health care professionals to the impor-tance of investigating the signs and symptoms of sexual abuse given the multiple impacts of abuse on victims’ lives.
1 mar 2024 · This study examined how potential variables (self-concept, dissociation, the severity of the abuse, and distress symptoms) contribute and interact to account for perceived PTG in a sample of 70 Israeli adolescents, all survivors of childhood sexual abuse, along with one of their parents.
For the sexual abuse subscale, a score of 6–7 indicates sexual abuse that is low to moderate, 8–12 indicates moderate to severe, and 13 or greater indicates severe to extreme. In this study, scores of 6 (low to moderate sexual abuse) and higher were considered indicative of CSA.
Signs of post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) were seen in 14% of adolescent victims of sexual abuse. The inci-dence of PTSD in this contingent of victims resulted from the fact that the sexual trauma, which is an extreme form of assault on the person, is a major psychologically traumatiz-ing and extreme event.
It adversely affects the health of children and adolescents. Health care providers are in a unique position to provide an empathetic response to children and adolescents who have been sexually abused. Such a response can go a long way in helping survivors recover from the trauma of sexual abuse.
