Click OK; Just tested it and it actually fits the windows next to the Sidebar when Maximized. Alternatively double click the icon in the TaskTray to quickly display it.
One method is before you unplug the external monitor (or before you unplug the dongle) is to open up the Displays Preference Pane in System Preferences and click on the "Gather Windows" button. If that loads then right click on Windows Sidebar icon on the task bar. Select 'Properties' and make sure the 'Start Sidebar when Windows starts' box is checked.
