press ⌘ ⇥ (Command-Tab) to show your running apps. Keep holding ⌘. press ⇥ until you've selected the minimized app. press the ⌥ (Option) key, and let go of the ⌘ key. You must release the Command key after pressing the Option key! Note that this only works for an app with all of its windows minimized.
To change this setting, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar, go to Mission Control, then turn “When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application” on or off.

You can also use the F3 (Mission Control) key on your Mac's keyboard to get a birds eye view of all the Spaces (desktops in Mac parlance) and quickly and directly switch to the desired one.
