These calculations and thought processes form a good basis for planning and building a sailing scale model of a real boat. There are many more calculations that designers make as they evaluate the performance of their designs, but our exercise is not about undertaking an original design.

Scale Notations. Model scales are denoted either as a ratio (e.g. 1:96) or in units per foot (e.g. 1/8"=1'), or sometimes both. These two notations are equivalent but approach the idea of scale from different perspectives.
