Download the Battle.net installer using a browser. Browse to /home/deck/downloads/. Right click and add the installer as a non-Steam game to Steam. Select Properties for the installer in Steam. Select Compatibility. Force the use of a specific compatibility tool. Select a version of Proton (Monroe suggests GE 7.49, but this wouldn't work for me.
I think it IS updating the battle.net executable fine, but for some reason the update indicator is malfunctioning or something is broken in the clean up section of the updater. What I notice when you click the update and restart it downloads a temp battle.net exe file in:
Please try temporarily switching your Steam Deck into battery storage mode (this can address potential issues with the Deck's firmware which could be causing the issue you are seeing): Disconnect all external devices/connectors from the device and make sure you can still produce the issue.
