Self-Locking Retaining Rings are ideal for applications that have high rotational requirements. This feature allows the ring to function properly at speeds that exceed the recommended rotational capacity. The self-locking option can be incorporated for both external and internal rings.
Self-locking rings, also called push-on rings, slide into a bore or housing and secure themselves into place using external wings or fingers that bite into the sidewalls. While they don't need grooves like standard retaining rings, they are limited to light-duty applications due to their reduced holding power.
Retaining rings install into an assembly to restrict the movement of rotating or moving components. They are removable with specialized tools and come in two forms, depending on the application. External retaining rings fit over a shaft and lock into a milled groove.
No groove is required for these light duty rings— their thick profile helps them grip the shaft. Open them with retaining ring pliers (sold separately), pass them over the end of a shaft, and release to install. Ring ID is measured with the ring uninstalled. 1060-1090 spring steel has good strength.
