Sekolah Menengah Teknik Alor Setar Kedah Darul Aman telah ditubuhkan pada 16 April 1972. Ini merupakan titik permulaan sistem pembelajaran teknikal di negari Kedah. Pengetua pertama sekolah ini Tuan Haji Abdul Razak bin Mohd.Sharif AMN. Beliau telah menerajui SMTAS sehingga tahun 1979.
