Starting in the 1950s, rebels in the south and the Sudanese government fought two decades-long civil wars. A peace agreement finally ended the second war in 2005. In January 2011 citizens in southern Sudan voted to become independent, and on July 9, 2011, South Sudan officially seceded from Sudan.
The civil war led to famines and forced millions of people to leave the country. A peace treaty signed in 2005 set up plans for the two regions to share power. It also called for the people in southern Sudan to vote on whether or not they wanted to create a separate country.
