A two-stroke (or two-stroke cycle) engine is a type of internal combustion engine that completes a power cycle with two strokes of the piston (one up and one down movement) in one revolution of the crankshaft.
Almost all car engines work on the four-stroke cycle, so called because it takes four strokes of the piston induction, compression, ignition and exhaust - to produce one firing of the fuel /air mixture. This means that the crankshaft rotates twice to complete each cycle.
As the name implies, the two stroke engine only requires two piston movements (one cycle) in order to generate power. The engine is able do produce power after one cycle because the exhaust and intake of the gas occurs simultaneously, as seen in Figure 1. There is a valve for the intake stroke that opens and closes due to changing pressures.
