Launched in February 2002, the fourth generation Ibiza was a good deal more sophisticated than its predecessor if not quite as sporting. The range was spearheaded by the 130bhp 1.9-litre TDi diesel model that seemed rather a curious decision for a company positioning itself as a sporting brand.
Other pokey XDS-equipped Ibizas include the 105PS 1.6-litre diesel and our pick as the sportiest car in the range, the desirable 143PS 2.0 TDI FR variant, which makes sixty in just 8.2s on the way to 130mph. That's the fast stuff dealt with, but the most popular engine is the base 12v 70PS 1.2-litre petrol unit.
