In a superhetrodyne the VFO interacts with the incoming RF signals to produce an intermediate (IF) frequency. A 5 MHz VFO implies that the IF is going to be within 5 MHz of the band or bands it covers. Such a receiver might cover 28 MHz, but that would imply an IF of 23 MHz or possibly 33 MHz.
