In acute cases, muscles are swollen and the dog has difficulty opening the jaw. In chronic cases, signs include persistent loss of appetite, weight loss, difficulty opening the jaw, and wasting away of muscle. Blood tests, electromyography, and a muscle biopsy may help to confirm the diagnosis.
Among pain-modifying analgesic drugs, gabapentin (10 mg/kg, PO, every 12 hours longterm) has been the most commonly used medication to treat OA in cats, and some limited data suggest clinical utility. An adult male German Shepherd dog presented with a chronic non-painful, non-weight bearing lameness of the right hind limb. On clinical examination a contracted sarotorius muscle was palpable. Histopathology of the affected muscle confirmed replacement fibrosis and muscle contracture.

The authors suspected a traumatic cause based on and infraspinatus muscles1,6,7 are more often affected by history and radiographic changes.
