Gillespie most recently served as an assistant coach for the Samford University softball team during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. His leadership propelled Samford's pitching staff to achieve multiple awards, including a Conference Pitcher of the Year and a SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Samford and head coach Kimball Cassady are parting ways, sources confirmed to D1Softball. Cassady spent three seasons as the Bulldogs’ head coach, collecting a 84-82 overall record and a 39-18 mark in SoCon play.
