Here, we present the most complete dataset on saltmarsh occurrence and extent at the global scale. This dataset collates 350,985 individual occurrences of saltmarshes and presents the first global estimate of their known extent. The dataset captures locational and contextual data for saltmarsh in 99 countries worldwide.
Despite their importance, saltmarsh areas are declining around the world, having lost between 25% and 50% of their global historical coverage (Crooks et al. 2011, Duarte et al. 2008).Vast areas have been lost through conversion to agriculture, urban and industrial land, while remaining saltmarshes face many other current and potential threats (Gedan et al. 2009): land claim for industry, port ...
21 mar 2017 · This chapter examines the value of salty coastal ecosystems, focusing especially on salt marshes, mangroves and drylands, and the current state of threatened halophytes.
30 lis 2022 · Here we conduct a global and systematic change analysis of Landsat satellite imagery from the years 2000–2019 to quantify the loss, gain and recovery of salt marsh ecosystems and then estimate...
21 mar 2017 · Coastal wetlands, such as saltmarshes, are globally widespread and highly effective at capturing and storing ‘blue carbon’ and have the potential to regulate climate over varying timescales. Yet only… Coastal saltmarshes are found globally, yet are 25%–50% reduced compared with their historical cover.
Global salt marsh loss and gain map for 2000-2019 visualized with a three-quantile bivariate color 71 ramp. Line plots of gain and loss (km 2 ) by Longitude and Latitude on the x and y-axis, respectively.
7 gru 2022 · According to a new NASA-led study, the world has lost 561 square miles (1,453 square kilometers) of salt marshes over the past 20 years. In a recent research paper, scientists described the first consistent global accounting of salt marsh locations and changes.
