Yes, Salad is safe. The application only mines when you click Start or (if configured to do so in the app's settings) it will mine whenever you've been AFK for some time. Furthermore, Salad is a legitimate company with employees to pay and investors to satisfy, so it wouldn't be in their best interest to make a malicious program.
