Please recommend me the saddest/melancholic piano pieces you know of. I'd like something on the softer, mellower side especially where the ending and beginning are concerned. Chopin prelude in e minor is fairly succinctly pure melancholy. Yes, that is sadness concentrate. Good pick.
I recommend one of my favorite composers -- Shostakovich -- for extortionate sadness: Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 13 This one-movement string quartet is miserable all the way through, but the ending is particularly biting, with the viola wavering way up at the top of its range (that final scream is mostly the viola, not the violins)
