The 9K38 Igla (Russian: Игла́, "needle", NATO reporting name SA-18 Grouse) is a Soviet/Russian man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. A simplified, earlier version is known as the 9K310 Igla-1 (NATO: SA-16 Gimlet), and the latest variant is the 9K338 Igla-S (SA-24 Grinch).
31 maj 2013 · The image above, a screenshot from a recently uploaded video, appears to show a fully assembled 9K338 Igla-S (NATO reporting name: SA-24 Grinch) in the hands of rebel forces in Syria. The fighters, from the Alasala Watanmia Front, exhibit four different man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) in the video uploaded on May 30, 2013.
The SA-24 Grinch Igla-S man-portable air defense missile (MANPADS) system is designed for use against visible targets such as tactical aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, head-on or receding, in the presence of natural (background) clutter and countermeasures.

The new missile has a heavier, more powerful warhead to maximize damage capabilities, as well as contact and timed fuzes for increased attack range. The warhead is a high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) and weighs 2.5 kg.
