During the first year at MIT, students lay the foundation for their college education and begin to explore the many academic pathways available to them.
Course 1 takes MIT’s “mind and hand” motto very seriously; students learn from lab exercises, hands-on projects and experimental research, which all supplement the material they learn in lectures.
The master’s degree generally requires a minimum of one academic year of study. Admission to MIT for the master’s degree does not necessarily imply an automatic commitment by MIT beyond that level of study. In the School of Engineering, students may be awarded the engineer’s degree.
Introduction to Solid State Chemistry is a first-year single-semester college course on the principles of chemistry. This unique and popular course satisfies MIT’s general chemistry degree requirement, with an emphasis on solid-state materials and their application to engineering systems.
