Wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius) is an invasive shrub in the same genus as raspberries and blackberries. Wineberry creates spiny, inpenetrable thickets that reduce an area’s value for wildlife habitat and recreation. It was introduced to North America in the 1890s as breeding stock for raspberries.

Identification. Leaves: Alternate leaves are tri-lobed with leaflets being spade-heart shaped. Edges of leaves are serrated while the underside of leaves is white in appearance due to wooly white hairs. Flowers: In spring, small, green flowers with white petals and tiny reddish hairs occur.

As with any other invasive infestation complex, large thickets of wineberry are best managed via a combination of mechanical and chemical means. Small seedlings can be hand pulled or sprayed while larger shrubs must be sprayed to attain good control.
