Protean traps can be won from Treasure Hunter. The traps can be used as a stackable substitute for bird snares, box traps, and marasamaw plants. The traps do not function as tortle traps, and they do not work with hunter urns or skilling effigies from the Effigy Incubator.
Protean traps and unstable protean traps are laid like normal bird snares, box traps or marasamaw plants at a relevant Hunter area. The trap has an increased chance to catch creatures, lasts 50% longer before decaying, and when it does catch a creature it grants 25% more experience.
What's your hunter level. If you're just starting out you probably won't be able to use them for a while. I would save your protean traps until about 88 hunter.

Unstable protean traps are a Treasure Hunter reward from the Cerberus Rush promotion. They can be used in the same ways as protean traps and grant 10% more experience than the stable version (resulting in 37.5% more base experience than the catch would normally yield) but do not benefit from Double XP or knowledge bombs.
