3.1 Geographical location, relief, climate, soils and Vegetation of Nigeria. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (henceforth referred to as Nigeria), is located on the West coast of Africa between latitudes 3°15’ to 13°30’ N and longitudes 2°59’ to 15°00’ E (Figure 1).

Nigeria's 356,669 square miles stretch across several climatic regions: a narrow coastal belt of mangrove swamps; a somewhat wider section of rolling hills and tropical rain forests; a still larger dry central plateau, with open woodlands and savanna; and a strip of semi-desert on the fringes of the Sahel.
