Located just 5 km north of Colombo’s city center, this project comprised two distinct packages of advanced bridge construction. Package 1 featured the construction of 23 multi-span continuous steel box girder bridges, collectively spanning 922 meters.
23 lis 2021 · The bridge was constructed with advanced technology from Japan culminating in several milestones in transport technology in Sri Lanka. The bridge itself consists of two sections - the extradosed bridge section over the river, and the steel box girder viaduct section over the existing roadway.
The Package 2 section involves the Superstructure and Substructure construction of a 1,185m total span bridge project including a 625m approach bridge with 3 lanes each for the inbound and outbound lanes, 380m main bridge crossing the Kelani River and 180m approach road.

The New Kelani River Bridge, recently constructed in Sri Lanka, is the country’s first extradosed bridge – combining the main elements of a prestressed box girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge but with the “stay cables” treated as external prestressing tendons.
Under the financial assistance from the Government of Japan, the Ministry of Highways and Investment Promotion of Sri Lanka decided to construct a new bridge adjoining the existing Kelani Bridge, interchanges and elevated road to extensively resolve to existing issues.
