21 maj 2024 · In dogs, ringworm usually starts as circular areas of hair loss, or round bald spots. This is where ringworm gets its name—the main clinical sign is a “ring” of hair loss. You may see one spot or several on your dog’s skin, usually depending on when you catch it.

In the dog, ringworm lesions usually appear as areas of hair loss (alopecia) that are roughly circular. As these circular lesions enlarge, the central area heals, and hair may begin to regrow in the middle of the lesion.
Early on, ringworm in dogs may not show any visible signs to watch out for. Initially, the fungal spores may be present on the skin or hair without causing an issue. However, the hair shafts and outer layer of skin slowly become affected by the fungus, which leads to more obvious symptoms.
General information and causes. Despite its name, ringworm is not actually a worm and it isn't always ring shaped! It's a fungal infection that causes raised, crusty, hairless patches of skin, often in a ring-like pattern. Ringworm doesn’t only infect dogs.
