Rings was the third film in the American Ring horror trilogy. It is a direct sequel to the 2002 film, follows after The Ring Two, and takes elements from Spiral, a novel by Koji Suzuki.
The twist that you get in this movie is that they didn't stop the curse, when they thought they did after the protagonist lives passed her marked death time. The copy being the real thing that saved her was the twist, and the consequence to not stopping the curse is the death of that guy.
