A retrograde pyelogram is a type of x-ray that allows visualization of the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis. Generally, this test is performed during a procedure called cystoscopy - evaluation of the bladder with an endoscope (a long, flexible lighted tube).
The retrograde pyelogram uses a dye to find out whether a kidney stone or something else is blocking your urinary tract. During the test, your doctor will insert a thin, lighted tube (cystoscope) into the urethra, which carries urine out of the body from the bladder.
Retrograde pyelography is performed by cystoscopically guided cannulation of the ureteral orifice and contrast injection. The procedure can be combined with placement of a ureteral stent to relieve an obstruction, or with possible stone extraction.
