The dermal epidermal junction is undulating and ridges of the epidermis, known as rete ridges, project into the dermis. The junction provides mechanical support for the epidermis and acts as a partial barrier against larger molecules. G. G. epidermis meets the dermis, evaginations that project into the dermis are formed known as ‘rete ridges’ or ‘pegs’. Complementary projections of the dermis are called dermal papillae.

Rete ridges surround the dermal papillae, which can be seen as small extensions protruding from the papillary dermis within the epidermis. These two structures are perfectly embedded; the alternation of a rete ridge with a dermal papilla creates a characteristic repetitive and wave-shaped pattern.
Note the rete ridges that are down growths of the epidermis into the dermal layer. These generate a stronger connection between the epidermis and dermis and help the skin resist shearing forces. In between rete ridges are dermal papilla, which contain sensory receptors called Meissner’s Corpuscles.
