I just found a way without any override from Google Drive app: System Settings / Privacy & Security / Files and Folders / Google Drive Then you can toggle where you need (or not) the context menu for syncing.
The only way kinda around this seems to be deleting the Google Drive icon from sidebar, and dragging subfolders like My Drive in there. For me the Google Drive icon comes back after a reboot but easy to remove again
I use a Keyboard Maestro script that launches at login, then activates Finder, right clicks on "Google Drive" using the 'Find Image on Screen' action, then clicks on "Remove from Sidebar" using the same action.
