Yes, nobody wants to be forced to go to the army. I mean, why don't people want to choose being a soldier as a job, whether as enlisted personnel or officers? This phenomenon is not limited to the United States; young people worldwide do not want to pursue a career in the military.
Wouldn't responding to an attack on your homeland be defending it? Really depends on who you ask. Some people would call it defending your country, others would call it retaliation, and both points are valid imo.
Do all NATO operations start w/ US decisions - for example sending forces to Afghanistan, and NATO leaders assess their level of participation, and make the decisions w/ how other countries participate? Or have there been cases where NATO has been the initiative force?
