21 kwi 2020 · The Red Jacket Valley, located just south of Mankato, is well-known for biking and hiking the Red Jacket Trail system or skiing at Mount Kato. However, many may not be aware of its rich history. Few of the original historic structures exist today. This winter we witnessed the removal of the historic Kerns Bridge (Yaeger Bridge).
This is a really nice paved trail (old rail bed) that is tree lined most of the way and wonderful to walk or bike on (blades and boards are welcome too). There is a small park on the trail with a community garden if you need a rest stop.
The popular Red Jacket Trail, which runs south from Mankato, utilizes three converted railroad trestles, including the stunning Red Jacket Trestle, which is more than 80 feet high and 550 feet long and traverses the Le Sueur River and busy MN 66 near the trail’s southern end.
