The T-70 is a light tank used by the Red Army during World War II, replacing both the T-60 scout tank for reconnaissance and the T-50 light infantry tank for infantry support. The T-80 light tank was a more advanced version of the T-70 with a two-man turret—it was produced only in very small numbers when light tank production was abandoned. [ 2 ]

The T-70M (»modified«), as it was called, was accepted by the GKO for Red Army service in March 1942. T-70 production took place at Zavod N o 37 in Sverdlovsk and alongside T-60 production at the Gokiy auto Zavod (»GAZ«) and Zavod N o 38 in Kirov. It completely supplanted the T-60 in September 1942.

The first prototype appeared in December 1941, and after completing the necessary tests (no doubt out of the desperation of war), the T-70 was officially commissioned by the Red Army in January 1942, with mass production scheduled to begin in March.
