Causes of colic can be divided into three general areas: intestinal dysfunction, intestinal accidents, and inflammation or ulceration of the intestine. The most common types of colic are intestinal dysfunctions; which include gas colic, spasmodic colic, and impaction colic. Gas colic typically occurs due to gas build up in the large colon or cecum.
Signs range from mild, recurrent colic to severe, continual pain. Treatment involves surgery to remove the fibrous tissue and the affected portion of the intestine. Medications are also given to try to reduce the formation of new adhesions.
A number of factors have been shown to increase the risk of this type of colic including: horses that display crib-biting or wind sucking behaviour, horses of greater height, those that have suffered from colic previously and is more common in the winter months in the northern hemisphere.
