I have recently written and released "Exet," which is free, open source software for constructing crosswords. It can help with all phases of crossword construction: creating a grid, filling it, and setting clues.
I used to use this a lot in the early 2000s. Very happy it still exists: http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/. i use qxw, works very well for the grid but doesn't handle clues. I really appreciate all the input you all have provided. I’ll definitely be looking into these programs.
My main goal in making this app is to make constructing, sharing, and playing dense New York Times-style crossword puzzles as quick and simple as possible. Crosswyrd will highlight how constrained each tile on the board is by highlighting it in blue, which especially helps when adding filler words around themed words.
