I guess the answer is killing Ares, the Blades of Chaos were a gift of the deal/job with Ares and the chains permanently bonded to his wrists, so some time or rather from GOW 1-3 Kratos learns how to have the chains disappear or go incorporeal like when he uses other weapons...
Assuming that the blades are of medium weight, I can easily say that the chains can be very useful for long range fighting. The chains can be used to maintain crowd control if fighting multiple enemies.

Canon Kratos in Ragnarok is probably max Leviathan, Blades and Draupnir with the Fate Breaker armor. There’s usually a reason the blades reset between games. GOW 1 he becomes a god. No reset. GOW 2 his god powers & blade upgrades are drained into the blade of Olympus. GOW 3 he falls into the lake of souls that nibble away your upgrades.
Kratos, of course, knows of a fire from another realm he can draw from, and in one incredible sequence we see him dig up the ghost of Sparta as he reclaims the Blades of Chaos to save his son.
