You can then use an inexact lookup like so: =TEXT(A3,VLOOKUP(A3,$I$3:$J$9,2)) where the number to format is A3 and the table above is in I3:J9. (When I've actually done this, I put this in a table named Formats.) If you want decimals (e.g., 1.6 Billion), you'll use 0.0,,, "Billion" in the format string instead.
