I tend to refer to the hero as Alef, but in actual playthroughs of the game I'll consult a name/stats guide to come up with a name that both gives me the stats I want for that playthrough and that still, well, sounds like a name. Lhux and Tariel are a couple of names I've come up with.
People will say that the 5 hero is named Madason, or the 7 hero is Auster or whatever, But it's important to realize those are NOT official canon names. Those are simply the default names given to the character in promotional material or when starting a game.
