26 mar 2023 · Here is a simple 2-element quad for 2m that is easy to build and does a good job. It works well for extending the range of an HT, transmitter hunting, SSB, or general use. When not in use it comes apart for storage. The SWR is less than 1.5 : 1 across the band from 144 to 148 MHz without any tuning.

When you can set your antenna up looking across salt water in the target direction, say, from Ho’okipa, Kodiak, or Ham’s Bluff, then a vertically polarized signal can work very well over long distances.
You can build a cubical quad with any number of elements, but make sure you read my section under “Feeding the Antenna” section if you are going to deviate from 4 elements. I seriously recommend building a 4 element quad.

For multi-element antennas there are two common methods: either use a standard boom with spreaders for each element in a flat plane, or angle the spreaders out from a common hub attached to the mast.
