The place names that you mention are transliterations from Arabic, and the letter Q is traditionally used in transliterations of Arabic to represent a stop sound which doesn't exist in English.
10 paź 2018 · Scrabble players are acutely aware that Q is a tricky letter. To use a Q in the game, a player must nearly always find an available U. (We’ll overlook the coveted two-letter word qi that any respectable Scrabble player will know.)
15 lis 2014 · Q&As or Q&A's? Q&As, not Q&A's. qua. A good word for playing in Scrabble, but not much else. quaff. A lot of writers like to pepper their writing with archaic words that aren't frequently used in speech. Quaff is, arguably, one them. Use this word, by all means. I won't be one to judge, but make sure that you use it correctly.
For example, someone may have played QUA (not in Scrabble III !), which was later turned into QUAD. IMPORTANT NOTE: Words in red would not be acceptable in the Dover Scrabble Club. Generally, this means that the word is not recognized by the American Heritage dictionary.
