It has been shown that use of pyrimethamine is safe in rabbits when used at the right dosage. The anti-protozoal drug will directly attack the parasite, where it will both block the metabolism of folic acid in the parasite and increase the activity of trimethoprim-sulfa against the parasite.

Toxoplasmosis is an uncommon cause of torticollis or other neurologic signs in the pet rabbit. Transmission is primarily by ingestion of infected cat feces. Serologic tests are available for antemortem diagnosis, and affected rabbits may be treated with pyrimethamine combined with a sulfa drug as for other companion animals. 15

In rabbits, analgesia protocols and dosages reported in the literature are often poorly researched and do not result in complete pain amelioration with the return of normal.

Pyrimethamine was not teratogenic in rabbits at dose levels up to 100 mg/kg bodyweight/day administered on days 6 to 18 of pregnancy. Pyrimethamine markedly reduced early stage cell division in rabbit embryos but implantation and foetal development were normal.
