Athletic pubalgia or sports hernia is a syndrome of chronic lower abdomen and groin pain that may occur in both athletes and nonathletes. It is defined as weakness or tearing of the rectus abdominus insertion to the superior pubic ramus.
Symptoms. A sports hernia will usually cause severe pain in the groin area at the time of the injury. The pain typically gets better with rest but comes back when you return to sports activity, especially with twisting movements. A sports hernia does not cause a visible bulge in the groin, like the more common inguinal hernia does.
A sports hernia (also called athletic pubalgia, sportsman’s hernia and Gilmore’s groin) is an injury (usually a tear) in the muscles and/or tendons in your lower abdomen or groin that causes chronic pain.
Clinically Relevant Anatomy. Bones and muscles attaching the pubis are important in understanding pubalgia. Femur, and pelvis and all the muscles that attach to pubic symphysis are important for the anatomic perspective of pubalgia.
It is characterized by abdominal and groin pain likely from weakening or tearing of the abdominal wall without evidence of a true hernia. Symptoms can appear acutely or insidiously, primarily as groin and lower abdominal pain that can radiate toward the perineum and proximal adductors.
