Ponad połowa szczepów Pseudomonas aeruginosa produkuje niebieskozielony pigment – piocyjaninę – stąd nazwa bakterii – pałeczka ropy błękitnej. Kolonie bakterii wydzielają również charakterystyczny słodkawy zapach – jaśminu lub kredek świecowych.
