This research offers new insight into how a profound experience with nature can encourage a new understanding of self, redefine relationships with others and nature as a whole, and promote meaningful and intentional decisions and behaviors.
Yet the research base isolating sensory experiences of nature beyond vision is sparse. In this paper, we review the state of this evidence so far, and identify some important gaps in our understanding of how nature experiences benefit human health and well-being.
Here we construct novel typologies of the settings, interactions and potential benefits of people-nature experiences, and use these to organise an assessment of the benefits of interacting with nature.

Transformation towards sustainability requires addressing power relations among different perspectives on the values of NCP. Intrinsic, instrumental and relational values need to be acknowledged and promoted.
