21 maj 2024 · In the original Hebrew, the word translated as “honor” in Proverbs 3:9 means “to bestow rewards upon; weigh heavily upon.”. Honoring God means showing Him the proper weight and value of His worth. We offer the Lord the first of our income because He is first and foremost in our lives.
Do not be wise in your own eyes: We can regard this as an explanation of what it means to lean on one’s own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). It is to regard our wisdom as better and greater than God’s.
What does Proverbs 3:9 mean? The Israelites were commanded by the Lord to give the first of their crops to the Lord out of gratitude for his bountiful provisions (Deuteronomy 26:1–3, 9–11). They were also commanded to tithe: to give a tenth of their wealth to the Lord (Numbers 18:21–24).

The true reference of the passage seems to lie between (1) and (3). The latter adapts itself to the parallel expression, "Write them on the tablet of thine heart," and also agrees with Proverbs 6:21, "Tie them about thy neck," the idea being that of their careful preservation against loss.
