23 kwi 2023 · Procalcitonin (PCT) serum levels have been shown to increase 6 to 12 hours following initial bacterial infections and increase steadily in the two to four hours following the onset of sepsis.
Table 1 shows the upper reference limit and the interpretation of PCT concentration based on disease severity specific cutoffs. Importantly, interpretation must be based on patient’s clinical context as other factors may also cause an increase or decrease PCT (see later).
22 paź 2021 · Interpretation of Procalcitonin Levels As stated above, the reference value for procalcitonin in adults is less than 0.1 ng/mL, and levels greater than 0.25 ng/mL can indicate the...
12 sie 2024 · Higher procalcitonin levels indicate that the infection is probably bacterial. Knowing what type of infection you have can help ensure that the appropriate treatment is given and that if you have a virus, you aren't needlessly prescribed antibiotics.
Learn how procalcitonin (PCT) kinetics can help clinicians monitor bacterial infection and antibiotic therapy. See PCT levels over the course of infection, how to decide when to stop antibiotics, and how PCT differs from other biomarkers.
10 maj 2024 · This topic reviews the role of procalcitonin in the evaluation and management of adults with lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Procalcitonin (PCT) is used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock. At the same time, PCT has also been used to guide antibiotic therapy. This review outlines the main indications for PCT measurement and points out possible pitfalls.
