Pro se legal representation (/ ˌproʊ ˈsiː / or / ˌproʊ ˈseɪ /) means to argue on one's own behalf in a legal proceeding, as a defendant or plaintiff in civil cases, or a defendant in criminal cases, rather than have representation from counsel or an attorney.
This Article addresses the already substantial and rapidly growing docket of pro se cases in both state and federal courts. Despite the long-standing recognition of the right to self-representation in the Anglo-American legal tradition, its effects on the legal system are still poorly understood.
