18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet [b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
It’s at this point that Joseph proves his faithfulness, first to Mary and then, more importantly, to God. According to Matthew, when Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he was “not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.” (Matthew 1:19) Joseph was a man of quiet strength.
